St. Paddy’s Day: Cleveland Style

St. Patrick’s Day comes during a celebratory time of year. It coincides with the Spring Equinox, Spring Break, March Madness, and the impending Daylight Savings shift where we “spring” forward and get more sunlight out of our days. In short, there’s more than one reason to celebrate on March 17th whether you have Irish heritage or not.

This year, the beloved holiday falls on a Friday and if Cleveland weather lightens up, we can have a sunny way to head into the weekend. But even if the weather is rainy and gray, there are plenty of places to cheers with green beer and feel the spirit of the Irish. We’ve rounded up a few favorites where celebrations will be happening all day long. Beer in the morning? Only on St. Patrick’s Day does that seem normal.

Win a Trip to The Emerald Isle

PJ McIntyre’s Irish Pub starts bright and early on St. Paddy’s Day for those who want to kick off their festivities at 7:00 AM. New this year is the chance to win a trip for two to Ireland or a cash prize of $2,000. Guests must be present to win, so if you’re starting early, make sure someone is listening for your name, if they call you as a winner.

Celebrate History with a Parade

This year, Cleveland celebrates its 175th Anniversary of the Cleveland St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The parade start time is a few minutes past 1:00 PM on Friday, March 17th and will start on Superior Ave. at E. 18th Street and wind through the streets until its final destination at Rockwell Ave. and Ontario St. Secure a spot to see the elaborate costumes, floats, production, and design put into one of the city’s best annual parades.

Eat a Boxty

If you plan on partaking in green libations on St. Paddy’s Day, then make sure you’re doing so on a full stomach. Why not take care of both at the same time at The Harp? In addition to their menu filled with sandwiches, salads, and entrees, they have six different kinds of boxty cakes to try. Never had a boxty? Now’s the time to sample this Irish potato pancake because The Harp has stuffed theirs with different fillings such as steak, salmon, or corned beef to name a few.

Partake in a Bit of Malarkey

It’d be a shame not to celebrate this March holiday (mostly known for festive times and debauchery) at a place called Mullarkey’s. It’s been named to “Best of” lists for favorite Irish pubs in Cleveland due to its free-flowing Guinness, rowdy, live Irish music, and specialty beer and whiskey tour. If you feel up to the challenge, take on the Irish Beverage Tour, which includes pints of Harp, shots of Jameson, or an Irish Car Bomb for starters.

Listen to a Live Irish Rock Band

U2 is the ultimate, Irish rock band, but when you can’t listen to the real deal, you can get the next best thing. U2 tribute band, ONE, will take the Hard Rock Rocksino Cafe Stage at 9:00 PM on St. Patrick’s Day for a free concert. For over two decades, this group has played venues across the nation in the spirit of one of the best musical artists in the world. Make sure to arrive early to get a spot close to the stage.

Irish Celebration at Its Best

Celebrate the luck of the Irish with your fellow Clevelanders and partake in the rich history the city maintains when it comes to this popular holiday. This St. Patrick’s Day enjoy as much of the green-filled activity as you can and roll into the weekend on a high note.
